Last week, inspired by out wonderful sister site Independent Traveler, we asked you to tell us about one different style of shore excursion you would recommend to a visitor to this fair isle – and we would choose the best three.
But we have only a limited number of Cruise Critic branded travel mugs to give away so there can only be three winners.
So here they are (in no particular order):
The Port of Newcastle – Visit Alnwick Castle (above) the home of Hogwarts, Harry potter fans know that parts of the great movie franchise were filmed here along side Durham Cathedral not too far way. Given the American appetite for Harry Potter this is a sure win!
– David Carr
Tender off and go explore Ilfracombe – check out Damien Hirst’s controversial Verity (the Broad with the Sword!), sit on the quay and enjoy fish and chips, or pop into any of the amazingly good restaurants to tempt the foodies. Visit the Victorian splendours of The Tunnels beaches, practice your rock pooling skills and take in a cream tea – you are on a cruise so dieting is not an option!! Take a horse and buggy ride, check out the local boat trips and enjoy this charming and traditional seaside resort.

Visitors from the USA would love a day in York. So much to see and do. The historical centre has plenty of shops both old and modern and a fine minster. After a walk around the ancient city walls you will be ready for morning coffee or lunch at the famous Betty’s tea rooms. There is always a queue but the home made cakes and chocolates are certainly worth waiting for.
